The Tradition tee displays an elongated mask with strong features, emblematic of traditional Fang masks, which originated in the rain forests of Gabon, and have been widely adopted and re-interpreted by artisans across Western Africa, particularly by the Ashanti tribe of Ghana. Made from Sese wood with accents in aluminum, they often feature an Adinkra symbol on the forehead to bestow meaning and protection and communicate tribal identity. The Fang masks are intended as wall décor to protect the home of the owner.
Each mask is unique and varies in size. Popular among tourists are ‘passport’ masks which are travel-friendly.
Cut fitting for male and female
The Generation tee is a triptych of African masks embodying history, culture and identity. The design is inspired by the ancient eastern philosophy of three wise monkeys (hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil) and ancient western mythologies’ representations of a higher power as a ‘triple goddess’ - mother, maiden and crone representing stages of growth and the endless cycle of life. We honour this hallowed art form through the traditional craft of stencil-making and screen-printing by hand.
